Fall on the Farm

It has been a very busy week getting oysters sorted, cleaned, and ready to harvest. I've handled thousands of full grown oysters in the last few days. I'm seeing oysters when I close my eyes. To combat this, I've been eating a lot of oysters.

The farmstand sales are slowly picking up. Hopefully word will spread as the first round of customers tell their friends. I've had very positive feedback so far. I'll be at-it again this weekend- manning the coolers from 6 to 8 on Friday night and 11-3 on Saturday.

I also have a wholesale distributor lined up. My oysters should be in southern Maine restaurants soon. It will also be possible to get them shipped (more info on that in later posts)

As always, it has been beautiful out on the water. The baitfish are around in abundance and the stripers and seals come into the cove in waves. There are many ducks around, but the terns that had been hanging around the farm have left on migration. Fall is here.

First Harvest

It was a very windy day for a first harvest, but everything went smoothly. I was lucky to have Mom along helping. Somehow Mom always seems to get the worst weather. We pulled a couple of cages, sorted and washed oysters, and scraped off some stubborn mussels. The oysters hit the ice and we headed back to Portland.

It's a strange feeling to finally be harvesting and selling oysters. It has been such a long and complicated process. It was a nice feeling sitting out at the oyster stand handing out my first round of orders. It was so simple and rewarding.

We celebrated the first harvest on Saturday afternoon after the last order was picked up. I ate so many oysters and had some nice champagne. It luxurious. I am excited that this work is finally coming to fruition. Cheers- to many more!

First Harvest

We begin harvesting oysters on Friday! Put in your orders now and spread the word!

Oysters will be sold for $15/dozen. There may be a few extras on hand, but we are trying to work on a pre-order system (so I don't over-harvest).

Pick-up will be 6 to 8 on Friday night and 10 to 3 on Saturday at our house on Essex St. in Portland (near Breakwater School).

Send your order to orders@winneganceoysterfarm.com by Friday morning to reserve your oysters!
